Powerful winter winds caused walls to collapse upon flimsy shelters housing people displaced by war in Gaza, claiming the lives of at least four individuals. This tragedy highlights the perilous situation that continue after more than 24 months of intense bombardment and severe shortages of humanitarian assistance.

Truce Provides Little Respite from Harsh Elements

Although a ceasefire has been in effect since October, humanitarian organizations report that Palestinians broadly lack the adequate shelter required to survive frequent cold-weather events.

Medical staff at Gaza City's largest medical facility, which took in the victims, said on this week that the deceased include a pair of adult females, a girl, and a male adult.

Separately, the Gaza health ministry announced on the same day that a 12-month-old infant died of extreme cold overnight.

"International actors has allowed us to witness loss of life in every possible way," stated Bassel Hamouda following the burial. "It’s true the bombing may have temporarily stopped, but we have witnessed every conceivable cause of fatality in the world in the Gaza Strip."

Family Crushed in Shelter Collapse

According to Shifa hospital, three people of a single family — 72-year-old Mohamed Hamouda, his teenage granddaughter, and his daughter-in-law — were killed when an 26-foot tall wall fell onto their tent in a area near the sea of Gaza City. At least five additional people were hurt in the incident.

Their relatives on Tuesday began clearing the debris that had buried their family and reconstructing the tent shelters for survivors.

Humanitarian Distribution and Ongoing Emergency

The UN and its humanitarian partners were distributing shelter kits, tarps, blankets and clothes as well as food and hygiene supplies throughout Gaza, said the UN office for the coordination of humanitarian affairs.

Most of Palestinians live in makeshift tents because their houses were turned into rubble over the course of the hostilities. Aid groups contend an insufficient amount of building supplies are reaching Gaza under the ceasefire.

Fatality Numbers Since the Truce

Local health authorities, part of the Hamas-run government, says more than 440 individuals have been fatally shot by Israeli fire and their bodies brought to hospitals after the truce began. The ministry keeps comprehensive fatality records that are seen as largely accurate by UN agencies and independent experts.

A spokesperson for UNICEF, representing the UN children's fund, said on Tuesday that no fewer than one hundred children under the age of 18 – 60 boys and 40 females – had been lost their lives since the ceasefire began because of armed actions, such as unmanned aerial vehicle attacks, airstrikes, tank shelling and employment of bullets. Those figures, he explained, reflected cases where enough details had been gathered to justify documentation, but the total toll is expected to be greater. He added that many hundreds of minors had been injured.

"Although 'bombings and gunfire have slowed' under the ceasefire, they have not ceased," the spokesperson informed journalists at a press conference in the Swiss city by video from the Strip. "Therefore what the world now calls quiet would be considered a crisis in any other place," he said.

Third Cold Season of Hardship

Gaza’s population of over 2 million people has been fighting to fend off the cold weather and storms at bay while enduring shortages of humanitarian aid and a absence of more substantial transitional shelter, which is badly required throughout the winter months. This marks the 3rd winter since the war involving the state and Hamas started on a date in late 2023, when fighters stormed into Israeli territory and killed around 1,200 individuals and abducted 251 others into Gaza.
