Thiago Pitarch has played seven matches for Real Madrid, including five starts.

Whenever a 18-year-old creates Real Madrid a historic moment in a pivotal Champions League tie against Manchester City, it inevitably draws acclaim and attention.

In only his maiden start in the competition - and fifth game for the club - Thiago Pitarch made a strong impression as the 15-time Champions League winners secured a three-nil round of 16 first leg lead at the Bernabeu.

The young player, who also made his club debut in the qualifying round a few weeks prior with a cameo off the bench at Sporting Lisbon, then helped Los Blancos defeat the English champions in Tuesday's second leg to confirm a quarter-final place.

At 18 years and 226 days, the midfielder became the team's most youthful starter to start twice in the Champions League knockout stages, surpassing Brazil forward Vini Jr's record by 10 days.

Rapid Ascent From La Fabrica

This talent is the latest to come through from the famed youth system and is rapidly cementing himself as one of the manager's most exciting young players.

He signed for Madrid from Leganes in 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico Madrid and Getafe's academies, and initially featuring for the under-19 side, where he quickly made a positive impact.

Pitarch worked his way up to the B team and it was during a pre-season game in which they faced the academy's first team, then coached by Arbeloa, where the teenager is said to have caught the attention of the current Real boss, who replaced Xabi Alonso in the new year.

Spanish media would later describe the moment as "an instant connection," adding Pitarch stood out not only for his skill on the ball, but for the energy, character and drive he brought to the team.

'His Greatest Quality Is His Personality'

In the pre-season of 2025, ex-manager Alonso called up Pitarch to train with the first team and awarded him minutes during the warm-up matches.

However, it was the change in manager that became the defining moment in his career as he was introduced as a late substitute in each leg against Benfica that set up the clash with Pep Guardiola's team.

"I have dreamed of this every night before going to bed, the first day I started playing football, each day you head to training and each day you play a match," said Pitarch after his first appearance.

"I've just fulfilled my ambition with the best team in the planet and in the top tournament."

Handed a first start in the Spanish league against Getafe - where he spent four years after arriving from Atletico in 2018 - he has retained his spot for the following four as injuries to Jude Bellingham and Ceballos provided an opportunity.

The teenager has seized it with displays that have belied his youth and experience.

"He's a very quick player, and you can see what he's capable of," remarked Arbeloa. "He is extremely energetic, with excellent stamina, effort and movement."

Pitarch's mentality has also stood out to his coach.

"His standout trait is his character," added Arbeloa. "He always wants the possession, and when pressed, he remains unfazed.

"I realize people are astonished to watch him make his debut in a Champions League match, but he's playing because I had total confidence in him to do his normal game.

"He will keep receiving chances with the first team. It's a pleasure to coach a talent like him."

Spain or Morocco?

Born in Fuenlabrada, in the Spanish capital's community, and grew up fully immersed in Spanish football, progressing through youth setups before joining Real Madrid's renowned La Fabrica system.

He possesses both Moroccan and Spanish citizenship, offering him the option to represent either country at the highest level.

According to Fifa eligibility rules, players may represent multiple nations at youth level without being locked in, with the final decision only binding once they appear in a official senior international match.

He has played for the Spanish national team at underage levels, turning out for both the under-19 and under-20 sides, and took part in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where La Roja reached the last eight.

Despite this, he has yet to commit to either senior national team, who are monitoring his rise with keen attention.

In a recent interview, Pitarch said: "I have not taken my final decision so far. Things are positive with Spain, but I will reach a conclusion soon."

This scenario echoes that of other bi-national players such as Real team-mate Brahim Diaz and Barca star Yamal. Whereas 18-year-old Lamine chose Spain, Brahim decided to represent Morocco.

Focus on the Future

At present, his attention is on making his mark in the Real side and repaying Arbeloa's faith.

He featured for 74 minutes in the two-one win at the Etihad, which sealed a 5-1 aggregate success and a quarter-final tie with Bayern Munich.

He was replaced by another academy player in Angel to emphasise Arbeloa's trust in younger players to aid the team pursue trophies to come.

After his impressive impact to date on the Champions League, the midfielder is expected to be a central figure in that.

"Arbeloa treats me the same. We deal with it very normally. I try not to overanalyze it excessively - I must earn my playing time on the pitch," he commented after the success at Etihad Stadium.
