What We Know Concerning the Victims of the Bondi Beach Shooting

At least 16 individuals were killed and in excess of 40 were wounded when assailants shot at a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, an attack local police are describing as a terrorist attack.

According to the most recent information, officials have confirmed the number of fatalities remains at 16, encompassing one of the suspected gunmen. Furthermore, 42 injured people were admitted to the hospital.

The deceased are still awaiting publicly named, but police believe their ages range between 10 and 87 years of age.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Known as a father of five children, he was the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and acquaintances remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member said.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.

She recounted the events before the shooting, saying they had been standing together when the gunfire erupted. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.

The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having endured immense hardship in their youth. They had later moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Officially, the Foreign Minister said that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the statement read.

One Child

A child who was rushed to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was among those killed during the attack, as per reports citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, many are still under care, with five in serious condition. Those hurt include two police officers who responded to the attack.

A wounded man is a bystander who rushed to the scene to confront one of the gunmen. Called a local hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he recounted the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the response of those who rushed to help. He stated he believed it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the attack. He said he listened to “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
