The New Animated Series' Introductory Sequence Chose the Wrong Critical Role Track
This latest animated series, the newest animated adventure from Critical Role, unveiled an exciting introductory sequence. It features our favorite group of outcasts, misfits, and rogues fighting hard and making their mark, while also hinting at multiple heart-wrenching personal histories for key figures such as the voice actor's mage Caleb, and another actor's warlock orc, Fjord.
All in all, the opening looks stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that something was missing in the song choice.
This sequence employs "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar composition created by producer and singer the talented musician. This piece from the official score of the same name, the second one released by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a wonderful nostalgic option, and I believe that fans of the sequel series will appreciate its inclusion.
But for me, The series' opening fails to capture the hype and energy that accompanied the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "It's Your Turn", composed by musician the artist, was an instant classic for me when it was first revealed in that year, and it improved further when cast member the performer added lyrics to the melody for the animated Campaign 2 opening in the later year.
Featuring vocals from one actress, Laura Bailey, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the track was memorable and fun. At the time, I hadn't even watched the follow-up series at that point, but this was such an earworm that I still saved it on my phone. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an installment of fantasy hijinks.
The Mighty Nein's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" doesn't strike the right notes in my opinion. It's an impressive piece of music, but from what I know of the group, I can't help but feel that its tone is a little off.
Naturally, the creators has already said that the animated show will have some changes and variations from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its opening appears as one of them.
This animated adventure will be available to watch on Prime Video from Nov. 19. If you can't wait before that, or wish to prepare to learn about the characters of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the actual play are accessible on the audio platform and the video site.
