The Game UN:Me: A Psychological Thriller Merging Silent Hill with Among Us Mechanics
The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed a number of fascinating upcoming titles, but one in particular has captured attention: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player adventure appears to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.
"It's a distinctive game where a young woman containing multiple personalities inside her must escape from a maze of the psyche," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Shattered Mind
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of high school age. Inside her exist four separate personas, each with unique anxieties and motivations. These entities can seize control at will, releasing their innermost terrors upon her suddenly.
Based on revealed footage, much of the action unfolds within a eerie hospital, while additional clips depict the protagonist navigating a abandoned church.
An Environment of Individual Dread
"What are you fearful of? What makes you uneasy?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. Authority figures. Things that appear minor to others can activate something primal inside us. This game delves into that concept — anxieties that are unique to each person."
The core gameplay loop revolves around managing whichever soul emerges at a particular moment. However, these souls will change involuntarily during gameplay. During exploration, each soul's anxieties become exaggerated and assault the girl one after another. As the persona shifts, so does the particular terror the player encounters.
Unsettling Aesthetics and a Deadly Choice
Initially, UN:Me displays noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is filled with orderlies who all share the same face, with unnervingly wide grins. Patients in the waiting room have large flowers where their necks are. Floral motifs are an ever-present element, contrasting organic elegance with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me presents a unique mechanic. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities haunting the heroine is the "true" one. "Each of the personas asserts that the body is rightfully them," notes a developer. "During the game, you must determine who is real."
Once players have deduced a persona is fake, they are forced to destroy it. But, since each soul can lie or hide the reality, it is very easy to make a mistake.
"Maybe you've already eliminated the real [soul] with your own hands," the narration states. "The final entity standing might be a fake. Either way, your choices are final."
UN:Me does not yet have a confirmed release date, but it is available to follow on platforms.
