The British designer Antony Price, the groundbreaking British fashion designer behind many legendary styles worn by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has sadly died aged 80.

Price was best known for his sculptured silhouettes and dramatic aesthetics, including the soft-colored suits that featured in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's landmark music video for "Rio".

"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message online."

This news arrives just weeks after he unveiled his most recent collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. The performer Lily Allen modelled a dress that paid homage to the famous black velvet "dress" historically worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.

A Pioneering Career

A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price headed for London in the early 1960s to attend the renowned Royal College of Art.

Upon completing his studies, he started his work in menswear at the company Stirling Copper and was the creator of the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that Sir Mick Jagger sported during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in the late sixties.

He founded his own label in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show was launched by creations worn by model Jerry Hall, who later wore the bridal gown Price designed for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.

Partnerships with Stars

A long-time collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price created the distinctive jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His characteristic talent to merge menswear and womenswear along with his expert craftsmanship in shaping body-hugging looks cemented his status as a "genuine original," in the words of the UK's fashion authority.

By the 1990s, he began working on pieces for Camilla, now Queen Consort, including several ensembles for her American tour after assuming the title.

With a vocation that covered half a century, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London last month in conjunction with the fashion brand 16Arlington.

  • Defined Shapes: Central to his design philosophy.
  • Dramatic Impact: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
  • Genre-Blending Design: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
  • Clients from Stage to Palace: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.

The fashion world mourns the loss to a true visionary whose legacy on style and culture remains deeply ingrained.
