Tetris Didn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

As any significant honors show nears, there’s always a demand to include of new categories to honor underappreciated efforts and fill the passions of followers dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer previously argued for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. So would board games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward just as with other single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification supporting my request stands as crucial and significant. The demand is this: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and it will always start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason cinema institutions avoid this approach. However, it represents an essential concession for the industry of gaming, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

The major gaming awards presently include classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories successfully include many game types, and you can find room for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Which classification works within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens outstanding logic titles launched regularly that have no home during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated for anything in 2014
  • Another imaginative release missed out in 2019
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked recently
  • Only a few logic titles scraped into independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

Frequently they represent compact experiences, but the art in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles rank among the most-played games in the world maintaining this status for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with famous sandbox experiences for the title of highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, while interacting across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. It would be easy to populate a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers operate at the demanding boundary interactive creation, producing among essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Comparable to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
