Senegal's Rising Talent Lamine Camara: From Dreams to Afcon Favourites.
When I enter the space, Lamine Camara grabs a soccer ball he clings to throughout our chat. It’s a powerful visual metaphor for a ambition he has always held onto. “I only wanted the beautiful game; I was focused solely on that,” states this Monaco and Senegal midfielder.
His resolve and natural ability won over clubs like Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. However, the most difficult person to convince was not a sporting director or manager, but his own father. “He was against me to play football but it’s because he had never watched me,” says Camara.
Overcoming Initial Obstacles
In time, on “a special day,” Camara earned his father’s blessing to chase his career in the sport. A further barrier was his small stature, which discouraged local club Casa Sports from giving him a deal.
However, Génération Foot – the institution that nurtured stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. After Camara was named the best player in a regional tournament, the scouts were “astonished” to discover he was not tied down. They moved fast. “They took me directly to the academy. They didn’t want me from returning to Casamance,” he recalled.
A Landmark Season and European Arrival
That decision put him on a trajectory to Europe. His breakthrough was 2023, “a year to remember,” starting with Camara winning the CHAN trophy. Just weeks later, despite fatigue, he played in the Under-20s Afcon, guiding his country to victory and being named player of the tournament.
A month later, he signed for FC Metz, emulating Mané. “Settling in wasn't a problem,” states the youngster. He resides alone in Europe, a choice his family encourage to keep him focused.
Inspiration and On-Field Identity
Distractions aren't a concern for Camara, who looks up to Kevin De Bruyne’s “humility” and exceptional skills. He is also a big admirer of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His ball striking and precision from dead-ball situations are notable assets. Camara confesses he must to control his aggression, having been sent off at the start of his spells at each French club. “It is a habit I carry with me!” he quips.
Monaco, Teammates and Upcoming Goals
With his current club, he cherishes the guidance of teammates like Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “As soon as I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I told myself we are really lucky,” he said.
Currently, attention is firmly on the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. “We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. After defeating England in their own country…,” he says, referencing a historic 3-1 win in Nottingham.
On a potential transfer to the Premier League, he remains committed to Monaco at present. “I am very comfortable here,” he affirms. However, he's often teased by icon El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Best Young Player awards. Camara jokes, but is serious about targeting the main Africa Player of the Year down the line.
“The pressure is on us – we can’t hide from that. Having beaten England at Wembley… it instills confidence.”
Looking ahead, Lamine Camara blends a modest start, unwavering focus, and big dreams targeting to lead Senegal to Afcon success and forge his own legendary path in the game.
