Nutrition Assistance Expected to Cease for Over 40 Million Throughout Ongoing US Government Shutdown

Federal agriculture authorities stated recently that monthly food benefits through a critical national support systems are not going out in November amid the persistent federal closure.

Shutdown Extends Into 25th Day

The funding lapse had reached its 25th day when the announcement was made, in response to calls from over 200 Congressional Democrats urging the USDA to tap into contingency funds to fund November's food assistance.

“Ultimately, the well has run dry,” the USDA stated. “At this time, there will be no benefits issued” starting next month.

Widespread Impact

More than 41 million individuals depend on the regular assistance, per official statistics. Some regions, such as New Mexico, use of the program is as high as a significant portion of citizens.

A memo obtained by journalists revealed that USDA officials decided against using reserve funds for the upcoming payments.

Legislative Deadlock

Republicans and Democrats are still at odds over how to support and resume the federal government.

Remarks from the leader of a budget research center suggested that the administration could have acted to act sooner to avoid interruption in payments.

“It could have, and should have taken steps weeks ago to get ready to access these resources,” the statement continued. “Rather, it may choose not to use them in an effort to gain political advantage” as Republicans seek to push upper chamber Democrats to approve a funding package to restart the federal government.

Emergency Measures

State leaders from two affected states activated emergency protocols in recent days to allocate funds for hunger relief preparing for nutrition assistance payments stopping in November.
