New Year Celebrants Told to Dress Warmly with Wintry Weather Predicted Throughout the UK
Weather experts are reporting a frosty commencement to the new year, with snow expected throughout a lot of the UK. Celebrants are being urged to wrap up as sub-zero temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.
Festive Plans Proceed In Spite of Alerts
The Scottish capital's famous Hogmanay festivities are planned to go ahead, following last year's postponement. This comes despite weather alerts for snow in northern Scotland.
"A cold New Year's Eve evening for those out celebrating, so warmer clothes will be needed," stated the weather service.
Celebrations Under Clear but Chilly Skies
Across the UK, the weather is likely to be ideal for fireworks celebrations, with no rain and open skies. The mercury are forecast to be chilly, making extra layers a necessity, according to forecasters.
In more northern areas, skies will be more overcast, but this is not expected to impact visibility for viewing fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.
Extensive Advisories for Friday
As we enter Friday, weather warnings are in place for Northern Ireland and from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and most of the south-east of England.

The Mercury Forecast to Plummet Even More
With the start of 2026, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are forecast to plummet as snow and gale-force winds are predicted to affect the north of the country.
About 10cm of snow is expected to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the highest roads and hills.
Public Health Advisories Released
At the same time, serious cold weather health warnings are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to stay active until noon on 5 January, with readings expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.
Officials stated this indicated the weather was expected to lead to major effects across medical and care provision. This encompasses a expected uptick in the fatality numbers among those with health conditions or those aged 65 or over.
