Gavin Newsom Confirms He Is Weighing a 2028 Presidential Run

The California governor, a prominent member of the Democratic party, has disclosed that he plans to decide on whether to seek the White House in 2028 after the 2026 elections are over.

"Yeah, it would be dishonest if I said no," the governor remarked when asked about contemplating a campaign for president following the 2026 ballots. "That wouldn't be honest. And I can't do that."

The governor's time in office as governor concludes in early 2027, and term limits prevent another run. Yet, he emphasized that any determination is a long way off.

"It's up to destiny," he remarked.

Increased Visibility as a Political Adversary

The California governor has come to the forefront as a high-profile adversary of the former president's team, leveraging his online platforms and advocating for a ballot measure that would increase Democratic House seats in following redistricting by Republicans. This action has drawn criticism from political opponents.

Clash on Transportation

Donald Trump's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, alleged that Newsom shows no concern about Californians in a weekend appearance on Fox News. The secretary announced plans to pull taxpayer dollars from California and suggested suspending the authority to grant CDLs.

"I intend to cut a significant sum from the state," he said, after a this week's tragic collision in California involving an unauthorized semi truck driver that caused fatalities and injured individuals.

His administration pointed out that the U.S. government had renewed the individual's authorization on several occasions, which permitted him to obtain a commercial driver's license under U.S. law.

The transportation secretary had before indicated he was holding back $40m from California for not enforcing language proficiency rules for commercial drivers.

Firm Rebuttal from the Team

"Former D-list reality star, now transportation chief, continues to misunderstand national statutes," the governor's team retorted in a last month's comment countering Duffy's threats. "In the meantime, unlike this clown, we focus on reality: California commercial driver's license holders had a fatal crash rate much lower than the national average. Texas – the sole state with a larger number of CDL holders – has a rate markedly elevated than California. Statistics are clear. The federal leadership misleads."

Polling Data and Political Future

A this month's survey revealed that nearly three-quarters of Democratic voters and a significant portion of the electorate indicated that the governor ought to campaign for the White House in 2028. After the current administration began, Newsom's favorability has increased to an typical level of 33.5% from approximately 30%, while his negative ratings has decreased from an typical level of previous highs to under 40%.

Earlier this year, the governor stated while visiting several swing states that he had "no idea" about his plans for 2028.

He noted his past difficulties, including being diagnosed with dyslexia at the age of five.

"The notion that a person who scored 960 on the SAT, who continues to find reading challenging, who was often seated at the back – the idea that you would even throw that out is, in and of itself, remarkable," he stated. "It's anyone's guess? I await who emerges in the next election and who rises to the occasion. And that's the question for the voters."
