Trump’s latest warning to introduce an additional complete levy on items imported from China has been called a “prime illustration” of American hypocrisy, as stated by the Beijing administration.

A Commerce Ministry spokesperson additionally remarked that China could enact its own unspecified “responsive actions” if the American leader follows through on his warning, adding that the country was “fearless” of a potential trade conflict.

This past Friday, Donald Trump responded at Beijing’s move to strengthen its rules for foreign shipments of critical elements, charging China of “becoming very hostile” and attempting to hold the global community “under its control”.

Additionally, he threatened to withdraw from a scheduled meeting with Beijing’s head of state Xi, which was expected to take place during a conference in South Korea later this month.

His statements on Friday shook financial markets, with the S&P 500 falling by nearly three percent, marking its largest decline since April.

These statements renewed apprehensions of a trade war between the two economic giants.

This past spring, the respective governments had agreed to remove significant levies on each other’s goods, which had created the possibility of bilateral trade stopping between the two nations.

As a result, United States levies on Chinese goods incurring an added thirty percent tariff compared with the beginning of 2025, while items from the United States entering the country are subject to a ten percent duty.

The most recent comments from China – issued by the Ministry of Commerce in the form of official answers to media inquiries – reflected language from the zenith of the latest commercial tensions.

Officials denounced United States controls on chips and semi-conductors while defending Beijing’s export controls on key elements as “routine measures” to ensure state interests and that of all nations.

The official said that for “a long time”, the America had “overstretched the concept of domestic safety, abused foreign shipment regulations and “adopted unfair treatments against Beijing.

“Turning to” tariff threats is not the proper method to deal with the Chinese government,” their representative said.

“China’s position on a import duty dispute has remained steady: we do not want one, but we are not afraid of one.”

Last week, Beijing announced it was reinforcing export controls on rare earth minerals and other materials critical for advanced tech manufacturing.

This was seen as a key move, as the nation handles about 90% of the global rare earth supply, which are used in products such as renewable energy components and mobile phones.

The recent comments from the US and China are being interpreted by observers as a method of bolstering negotiating stances ahead of forthcoming discussions.

It is unclear whether a summit between Donald Trump and China’s leader, planned at a high-level meeting in the Republic of Korea in the coming weeks, will still proceed.
