Astronaut Reveals Depression In the Wake of ‘Tsunami of Harassment After Historic Trip

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has publicly detailed her emotional downturn after enduring a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.

The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission earlier this year, which also featured celebrity crewmates.

The much-publicized journey was widely scrutinized by some, who cited its expense and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction eclipsed her moment under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” she recounted in a social media post, recalling a phone call from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the journey.

She characterized the news reports and online discourse as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she revealed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Eclipsed by Backlash

The researcher, who has conducted studies in female health science and conducted tests during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – from her lab work and astronaut training to the symbolic importance of her background – was buried under the tide of misogyny.

She is widely recognized for her pioneering work championing the cause of sexual assault survivors.

Her own goal of reaching space was put on hold after surviving a rape during her college days, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

A Path to Recovery

In the time since fulfilling her dream, she noted the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she acknowledged the followers whose support pulled her through. “Your support rescued me,” she said.

She noted that despite the negativity, important benefits had come out of the mission, including spotlight on her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.

Flight Details

The fully automated spacecraft lifted off from Texas in April, carrying the all-female team on a short trip that crossed the edge of outer space.
